Determining your Flex SDK version number

The following example shows how you can determine your Flex SDK version within a Flex application by using the internal mx_internal::VERSION property.

You can also find the version number by doing one of the following:
(a) Viewing the flex-sdk-description.xml file in your Flex SDK’s root directory:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<flex-sdk-description>
    <name>Flex 4.0</name>
    <version>4.0.0</version>
    <build>3934</build>
</flex-sdk-description>

(b) At a command prompt, navigate to your Flex SDK’s /bin/ directory and type mxmlc -version:

C:\\dev\\flexSDKs\\4.0.0.3934\\bin>mxmlc -version
Version 4.0.0 build 3934

Using named groups with Regular Expressions

This is always a neat trick that I seem to always forget about, so I thought I’d post it here. When working with Regular Expressions, the RegExp class supports named groups. So instead of having to go through the RegExp result and access it like an array ([1], [2] .. [n]), you can use named results. Long story short, it can make working with the results a bit more intuitive. I made a simple example below which parses the user’s Flash Player version and displays the operating system/platform, major revision, minor revision, build number and internal build number.

Checking the user’s Flash Player capabilities using the flash.system.Capabilities class

There are a lot of times when you may want to know what version of the Flash Player plug-in your visitors are using. Or perhaps you want to know their screen resolution, operating system, language, whether they have accessibility or an IME. Finding all this out is simple thanks to the Flash Player’s flash.system.Capabilities class.

The following application will show how you can grab all the capabilities of the user’s Flash Player and display them in an easy-to-read DataGrid control.
